Sarasota Bay Cruise and the Sandbar

Thursday and Friday was spent hanging around at home for a bit, with a little shopping here and there for good measure.

On Saturday we headed down to the Marina Jack right on Sarasota Bay for a 2 hour sightseeing cruise on the Le Barge Cruise Ship. Lots of luxury homes and lovely nature to behold. Many of these extraordinarily luxurious houses are only viewable from the water side due to high security fences and walls, so it is a real treat. We got to see a few homes owned by celebrities, such as the singer of AC/DC and the trash TV king Jerry Springer.

After our cruise we headed out to the Sandbar, one of my favorite e seafood restaurant on Anna Maria Island. The weather was very nice, overcast and kind if a magical glow to it all.

Today we have only some shopping to do, otherwise I have a feeling we will mostly hang out at home and relax.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Today we headed out for some more shopping. I need 4 fancy dresses for the anniversary cruise we are taking in December, and so far I have 3. I still need to find some nice dresses for Sarah as well. Lucky Ken who can just slap on one of his suits and be done!

After our shopping spree we had a nice lunch at one of my favorite's, The Olive Garden. Wivan (who is from a way different generation then myself and Ewa, have a tendency to complain. A lot.), hated the salad, thought the salmon was dry, and frowned at the side dish. The only thing she really liked was their bread, which is famously yummy, (she even wanted to sneak some into my bag to take home...).

Then after a quick stop home we picked Sarah up in school and headed down to Sarasota Jungle Gardens. Originally, the land was a swampy banana grove listed in the city records as “an impenetrable swamp”.

A local newspaperman purchased these 10 lush acres in the early 1930’s with plans to develop the virgin subtropical jungle into a botanical garden. Over the past sixty-eight years, Sarasota Jungle Gardens has evolved into one of the areas most historical and beautiful attractions. Many are surprised to find that this once private property is now home to hundred’s of abandoned, abused and unwanted animals.

In the beginning, Sarasota Jungle Gardens was not meant to be a “Tourist Attraction”; however, its destiny was firmly and forever planted among the flora that abounds in what was once described as an “impenetrable swamp”. It is a beautiful oasis to wander around in and get up and close to flora and fauna.

Weird looking roots on a palm tree

Sarah borrowed the lap of a new friend

Stately palms

A beautifully colored pelican

The gardens are very lush, as you can see here

More odd roots

The resident flamingos were very friendly

Sarah nestled in some cool banyan roots

Cool looking plants growing in the water

More banyan roots

A Florida Egret, one of the most common birds around here

More palms

A double hibiscus

Palms again

Ewa got some new friends

Flamingos get their color from the shrimp they eat, they are actually white!

One of the many colorful parrots at the gardens

...and one of his buddies

We took a break for "fika" at the Flamingo Cafe, and we had a table right next to these Koi fish

Buster, the resident albino peacock. He has been here a looong time, I remember seeing him way back in 1997!

This guy caught a little bit more fish then he could handle it seemed...

All in all we had a great visit!

More shopping today

After a night of heavy rain we drove down to southern Sarasota where we had a nice lunch at Sweet Tomatoes, a great salad buffet place.

Then we headed over to the Westfield Shopping Center, one of the larger shopping malls in our area. There Wivan got a haircut and we shopped a bit at Claire's and the Clinique counter at Dillard's. We also managed to do some damage at The Body Shop.

Wivan and Ewa outside the mall entrance.

Wivan got a great haircut, it was only 125 SEK with tips, a bargain!

Looking good!

Then it was time to pick up Sarah in school, so we stopped by Auntie Annie's to get some pretzels to snack on a something cold to drink. And that brings us pretty much up to date.

Tomorrow we are planning a visit to the Sarasota Jungle Gardens after we pick up Sarah from school at 1:15 PM.

Myakka River State Park

Today we headed to Florida's largest state park, just southeast of Sarasota. Our goal was to see alligators, and you can take a look at the movie below to see how much luck we had in that department...

At least according to the signs that abound in the park, alligators do live here...

The old oaks with the Spanish moss hanging like beards from the branches are beautiful and stately (even though it is not really a moss and not really Spanish, it is a flowering plant...)

A enormous (about the size of an adult's palm) Golden silk orb weaver (also commonly called "Banana Spider" in its web... It is venomous, but its neuro toxin (similar to that of the black widow) is not deadly for humans, and will most likely" just" cause pain for 24 hours...

This state park has an abundance of vultures, mainly black vultures and turkey vultures (these are black vultures)...

Day in paradise

This sign in the beach house we got to borrow from Ken's friend says it all...

Wivan enjoying the tranquility on the deck...

Awesome!

Great spot to relax at after lots of swimming...

Wivan och Ewa compare shell finds...

The pelicans are hanging out...

The steps down to the beach...

A washed up sea urchin...

The beach house taken from down at the beach...

The front of the house...

Front...

Inside the house's relaxing living room...

From a different angle...

Wivan and her great grand child Sarah having lots of fun in the Gulf of Mexico...

Ewa on the hunt for cool shells (which we found lots of one this private, undisturbed beach)...

Just beautiful (and all ours for the day)...

The front of the house (you can see teh upstairs hurricane shields are still down)...

An infinite ocean, just us and the wild life...

I wish I had a view like this every day!

You can see where the latest storm ate away the sand all the way up to the palm trees.

My car with a Swedish flag!

Lots of fish, they used us as a reef to hide from the birds!

The girls frolicking in the surf...
