Historic day

Today is a very historic day. I hope it is the day America gets its first African American President. We won't know until very late tonight, the last polling places (California) close at 11 PM my time. And then it is just to watch TV and see the results rolling in, state by state. Florida seems to yet again be one of the toss-up states, one of the states that could go either Republican or Democratic. I sure wish I was a US citizen at a time like this, I am really itching to vote!

If you are not in the US you might not have access to the same extensive media coverage as we do, and if you are interested to follow the results as they come in, I recommend checking out The New York Time's excellent election coverage, with interactive results. As you can see there, the votes that decide who wins are called electoral votes, and there are 538 in all, the winner would need 270 of these to win the presidency. Each state has a certain number of electoral votes; this is a great site to make sense of it all!

Ken voted this afternoon, and as the Republican he is (unfortunately), he told me at the last minute he changed his mind and voted Obama. I was very pleasantly surprised until I realized he was just teasing me, the bastard :-)!

Anyway, I am very excited to see the results. Either way it is a big deal, this is the first time since JFK, a senator will become president (as both Obama and McCain are such). It is as we all know also the first time an African American is running for the presidency, and, perhaps not as desirable a record, it would also be the OLDEST president ever elected for a first time if McCain won...

It was very exciting to get the new furniture delivered on Friday, and then I had to wait until night when Ken got home to get it into the bedroom, it was very heavy stuff. We put some of it together on Friday, but since it was also Halloween and we had a very excited daughter that could not wait to go trick or treating, so of course we had to postpone further installation of the furniture.

We had a great time trick or treating in our neighborhood, the weather was perfect, just around 72F (22C). Lots of people and just fun! Sarah had known for some time she wanted to be a shark and so she was. A lot of people gave her compliments on her outfit, and it was a pretty original idea!

On Saturday afternoon we set out to assemble the bed, but realized there was a rather large scratch on one of the bed sides, so we had to hold off on it again. Luckily the seller had another set in that we could grab the side from, so we got that taken care of on Sunday. All that needs to be done now is centering the bed against the wall, which I can't do myself, way too heavy to move.

We are very pleased with our choice, the quality is very solid.

Here is a peek at how the end result turned out:
